Another Wake Up Call DarrenKeith

This past week Google released Google+ project which may or may not become a competitor with Facebook and from what I've been hearing it's not too bad so me being a lover of tech, gadgets, and social network I reached out to a couple of geek peeps for an invite which I received two invites (thanks Anjuan and Bill) but when I went to use the invite this is the screen that popped up for me.

You know what's coming next from me right? Now I can see if I didn't have an invite but when you have an invite and you're still left out in the cold, that's just...well...cold.

How can have invites and then limit the invites? Google, now you know that many want to check out this new social network platform because although many are on Facebook it's cool to have choices but again to give invites then realize that you would have a flood of people cashing in their invite to test out this new product...this surprises you? Really!?!

At first I was a little "ticked" but then the rational side of me looked at this and saw this as a blessing because I'm being honest with myself, I need to spend more time creating on my own sites and less time commenting on Facebook.

This hit me when I post photos on Facebook. Mind you now I have a pro account on Flickr and I have a cool Tumblr and 500pix account where you have more freedom with your photos but I have found myself posting photos on Facebook which you really have less freedom with YOUR images. How can I complain when I have sites where I can do much more with my photos and whine about what I CAN'T do on Facebook. That's stupidity on my part. It's like being in an abusive relationship knowing you can do better for yourself. Why try and change the person that treats you like crap when there is another person that wants you to not show you love but loves themselves.

So with that said, like the character Leroy Jethro Gibbs I will begin coming up with my "50 Rules" when it comes to dealing with the world of social media and technology. This will be a work in progress but I think the journey will be fun for me.

DarrenKeith's "50 Rules"

1. Begin creating more on the web instead of being a spectator.
2. You don't have to be a "Joinr" of everything that comes down the pike
3. Read more books
4. Listen to more books
5. Enjoy being offline more so than being online
6. When out and about if there is no WI-FI hotspot around don't check the web unless you absolutely need to because you know your connection is slow as heck any way.
7. Learn to be more creative with your hands from the computer
8. Listen to more music
9. Appreciate the sound of "Silence"
10. Learn a new word every day [ http://www.vocabulary.com/ or http://dictionary.com ] and try to use it in your vocabulary and writing each day
11. Write a post every day...whether it's something you wish to share with the world or yourself because in order to become a better writer you have to...you know...WRITE.

12. When it comes to the social network, gadgets, these are just TOOLS...not the "end all/be all" things to life and happiness.
13. When out with close friends and family unless you're taking photos with your phone, TURN IT OFF!!!

I will add to my list as time goes on but this is a start. So thank you Google for not honoring my invite because in a way this was another wake up call for me showing me that I spent too much time online instead of offline.
