My Thoughts on "Jumping the Broom"

When my queen wanted to see this movie I had already performed a checklist and kicked this movie to the curve before seeing this "disaster" . I knew there would be loud talking in the movie theater. I had already knew it was going to have buffoonery, stereotypes characters left and right but my sweet thought it was going to be a good movie because in her mind, T.D. Jakes name was behind it and this was her day (Mother's Day). I went but I this was not going to be a good movie.

I hate when she's right.

"Jumping the Broom" was a pretty good. It had substance. At first my attitude was thinking, "Chick Flick" but I would have this movie in my movie library.

The movie basis the premise around a young lady, beautiful, intelligent, spontaneous Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) who finds herself getting involved with the wrong men and given up the "cookie" before learning about them but this last time she made a promise to God that she would not do this again until He sends her the right man and because his wife. While in her car she runs...well hits the man of her dreams, Jason Taylor (Laz Alonzo). They date, they fall in love. While coming from the opera she tells him she landed the job overseas. At first it seems Jason doesn't believe in long distance relationships and it seems they will go their separate ways but it was all a set up when she encounters musicians playing in the square and there he proposes to her and she accepts. When it comes times to meet each others family this is where the fun begins.

The cool thing about the movie is that how you can learn from everyone rather from "Uptown" or "Downtown" and everyone has flaws but you learn to love the person you're going to choose for your mate and be respectful but honest with one another. Loretta's character very streetwise but very loving as well as Angela's may have been cultures but you could tell that her character was a force to be reckoned with when it came to her family.

I should have known the movie would have some substance with the work of the lovely Angela Bassett and the lovely Loretta Devine. Whenever I see these two gifted actresses in anything they bring their heart and sould into every performance. Brian Stokes Mitchell, who plays Angela Bassett's husband (I couldn't remember what television show he starred in until I began writing this...he was in "Trapper John, M.D." and has been nominated for Tony's) Tasha Smith is great in her own right. But what surprised me was the Mike Epps. Of course he had the "comic relief" role in the film but not the over-the-top comic roll. Mike is going to be Mike but playing Loretta's brother "Willie Earl" (don't front, we have at least one relative name "Willie" or "Earl" or both name together). Also Pooch Hall (from BET's "The Game") character was cool in this movie, playing Laz's level headed friend and colleague. The character played by Julie Bowen was okay but she held her own (she was kind of a goofy in some scenes but I looked passed it). Even Master P's son, Romeo, has a small role in the movie and I have to say if he takes acting serious he could become a good actor. It was cool to see El Debage and Gary Dourdan in the movie considering the ups and downs that they have had, they rounded off the movie really well.

Overall the movie went in directions I didn't think it would and I have to admit it made me tear up in a couple of scenes. While on the web I see that it didn't receive high marks but I've learned years ago I've stopped paying attention to them because that's one person's opinion and even if it was more I enjoyed the movie.

I'm glad listened to my queen in seeing this movie, it was good night and I'm glad I didn't ruin the evening for my baby.
